Week 1: Introduction & Rule 1: Stand Up Straight with Your Shoulders Back

Objective: Establish group norms, goals, and build rapport. Introduce Rule 1 and its significance in personal responsibility and assertiveness.

Activities:

  • Group introductions and icebreakers.
  • Discuss the concept of personal responsibility.
  • Reflective exercises on posture and its psychological effects.
  • Group discussion on how standing up straight can influence one’s approach to life challenges.

Week 2: Rule 2: Treat Yourself Like Someone You Are Responsible for Helping

Objective: Explore self-compassion and self-care.

Activities:

  • Discuss the importance of self-care and self-respect.
  • Reflective journaling on how participants treat themselves versus others.
  • Group discussion on barriers to self-care and strategies to overcome them.

Week 3: Rule 3: Make Friends with People Who Want the Best for You

Objective: Examine the influence of social relationships on well-being.

Activities:

  • Discuss the impact of friendships on mental health.
  • Group activity: Identify and discuss positive and negative influences in participants' lives.
  • Reflective exercise on setting boundaries and choosing supportive relationships.

Week 4: Rule 4: Compare Yourself to Who You Were Yesterday, Not to Who Someone Else Is Today

Objective: Address the dangers of comparison and encourage personal growth.

Activities:

  • Discuss the concept of personal progress and the dangers of social comparison.
  • Reflective exercise: Identify personal growth over the past year.
  • Group discussion on setting realistic, personalized goals.

Week 5: Rule 5: Do Not Let Your Children Do Anything That Makes You Dislike Them

Objective:  Explore the balance between discipline and affection in relationships.

Activities:

  • Discuss the importance of boundaries in relationships, including with oneself.
  • Role-play exercises on assertiveness and setting limits.
  • Group discussion on healthy discipline in various relationships.

Week 6: Rule 6: Set Your House in Perfect Order Before You Criticize the World

Objective: Focus on personal accountability and self-improvement.

Activities:

  • Discuss the importance of addressing personal issues before focusing on external problems.
  • Reflective exercise: Identify areas of life that need "cleaning up."
  • Group discussion on personal accountability and taking small steps toward improvement.

Week 7: Rule 7: Pursue What Is Meaningful (Not What Is Expedient)

Week 8: Rule 8: Tell the Truth – Or, at Least, Don’t Lie

Objective:  Emphasize the importance of honesty with oneself and others.

  • Discuss the psychological and social impact of honesty.
  • Reflective exercise on areas where participants may struggle with honesty.
  • Group discussion on the challenges and benefits of truthful communication.

Week 9: Rule 9: Assume That the Person You Are Listening to Might Know Something You Don’t

Objective: Enhance active listening and open-mindedness.

Week 10: Rule 10: Be Precise in Your Speech

Week 11: Rule 11: Do Not Bother Children When They Are Skateboarding

Objective: Address the importance of risk-taking and resilience.

Week 12: Rule 12: Pet a Cat When You Encounter One on the Street & Program Wrap-Up
